At Sacred Heart College, a 138-year-old school in Tasmania, two outdoor courts played an important role in recess, physical education and after-school sport. Yet on its compact, largely built-up campus, they offered little protection from rain, wind or summer sun. With just one indoor court and no sheltered space large enough to bring the whole school together, poor weather could disrupt programs and require students to travel offsite.
The College set out to create a covered, flexible space for primary and secondary students - one that could also support community sport, assemblies and events. The response had to sit comfortably beside the historic chapel and school hall, while navigating a steeply sloping site of rock and deep fill. Underground rooms and an existing void beneath the courts, tight street access and nearby powerlines added further complexity, requiring careful engineering and coordination throughout construction.
Greenline worked closely with College leadership, HPE staff and other stakeholders to create a double-court canopy tailored to the school’s sporting and gathering needs. Translucent membrane strips draw natural light into the space while providing 99.9% UV protection. End walls and side skirts reduce wind-driven rain, while 200-lux lighting, retractable hoops, PA, power and CCTV support sport, events and assemblies.
The structural response was carefully resolved. A 10-metre cantilevered bay spans the underground rooms, avoiding footings and excavation near the void. Additional roof bracing established a load path from the cantilevered bay to the adjacent column line. Greenline also coordinated a temporary TasNetworks shutdown to install the structure safely beside the high-voltage lines.
Since opening, the covered courts have become a dependable hub for basketball, handball, cricket, pickleball, physical education and everyday play. Students can stay active when rain, wind or strong sun would previously have disrupted programs, while teachers and coaches have more reliable access to court space. Competition-level lighting extends usability on darker days, and retractable hoops clear the floor for assemblies, liturgical events and community activity.
For Sacred Heart, the value is in making a constrained campus work harder. The project converts two weather-dependent courts into a protected, multi-use venue, easing pressure on the school’s single indoor court and reducing the need to take students offsite in poor weather. It gives primary and secondary students more equitable access to sport and recreation, while creating a durable, future-ready facility that broadens the College’s capacity year-round.
