How We Install a Tension Fabric Structure

Here is our step-by-step process for fabric structure installation:

1. Consult and design

Before the fabric structure installation, we must conduct the consulting and design phases. This is where you tell us your needs and desires for the tension fabric structure, and we work with you to ensure we meet all of your expectations.

2. Manufacturing

The steel framework of our tension fabric structures is manufactured and coated with anti-corrosive material to protect it from future rusting.

The tensile fabric (usually PVC) is also manufactured to the specifications of your design. It is patterned and cut to fit the framework.

3. Framework installation

The first step to installing tension fabric structures requires building support structures in a steel frame that we can stretch over the fabric cover later.

The installation crew makes the metal framework on-site according to the design, prepares it, and gets everything set up to install the fabric covering.

4. Attaching and tensioning the fabric

Finally, the tensile fabric is attached to the framework by the construction team and tensioned accordingly. In windy conditions, we may need to delay fabric installation. However, generally, this only takes a day or two on-site.

Once the fabric structure installation process is complete, our installation teams conduct a final inspection and safety analysis of your new fabric structure investment to ensure the stability and safety of the final product.

The Types of Tension Fabric Structures

As a versatile shade solution, many design options are available for fabric commercial shade structures. Here are a few of our most popular designs:

Barrel vaults

The barrel vault stands as one of the most popular permanent shade options. The curved architecture of the Barrel Vault structure allows optimal height clearance for sports activities while maintaining low edges to reduce the effects of harsh weather conditions.

Also known as a PVC structure, PVC COLA (covered outdoor learning area), or a shade and membrane structure, the barrel vault offers the ideal solution for large clear spans, particularly for:

  • Sports courts
  • Bowling greens
  • Swimming pools
  • School quadrangles

Star structures

Comprised of a single pole and extending arms, star fabric structures effectively protect smaller spaces from rain and UV. Primarily used in playgrounds, they are an excellent option for smaller zones within sports clubs, schools, and outdoor eating venues.

You can opt for PVC fabric for more comprehensive UV protection and waterproofing or shade cloth, which is less expensive and provides decent protection.

Cantilever

A cantilever shade structure relies on posts on one side, with curved shade supports that extend to provide overhead shelter. These structures are frequently seen in walkways, restaurants, and areas where using posts at both ends is challenging.

The curved design ensures proper water drainage, offering excellent shade below the sail. These structures efficiently cover extensive areas without obstruction and only require columns at only one end.

Conic

Conic structures use an umbrella or pavilion design to protect outdoor spaces without requiring an extensive metal framework on the ground. With a single pole positioned in the centre of the structure, the activities below remain uninterrupted by any obstructive framework.

We can adjust the size and height of a conic fabric structure easily – making for a versatile design we can install in all kinds of places.

How Long Does Fabric Structure Installation Take?

The time it takes to install a fabric structure depends on many factors, including the size, material, design and the desired site.

Generally speaking, our fabric structure takes 10-12 weeks to complete. This estimate includes the planning stage, which we take seriously and accounts for most of this time frame.

You can expect on-site work to continue for only around two weeks, as we value your need to continue using your space and limit on-site activity as much as possible.

What are the Benefits?

Cost-effective

Due to the relatively fast construction time and minimal materials needed compared to a building, a fabric structure can be highly cost-effective, especially for large areas that require shade and weather protection, like stadiums or warehouses.

Simple and fast to construct

Although they require careful designing, when building the structure, all that’s left to do is install the framework and then attach and tension the fabric – a much more streamlined process than constructing a regular building.

Sustainable

The need for fewer materials for a fabric structure also contributes to better sustainability. Vast spaces can be protected with a fabric structure using a tensile membrane, with minimal use of the earth’s resources compared to other methods of covering outdoor areas.

Noise minimising

Opting for a PVC tensile fabric structure can reduce noise levels within a space. PVC has sound-absorbing properties, creating a less distracting environment for activities than traditional materials like steel, which often produce echoes in crowded settings.

Allows natural light

Unlike other materials such as steel, PVC, or shade cloth, natural light can pass through while protecting from harmful UV rays. This leads to enhanced energy efficiency, allowing you to save costs on artificial lighting during the day.

Flexibility

Fabric structures are highly adaptable. We can easily install and remove structures, allowing for temporary or seasonal options. Their durability also makes them an excellent choice for a permanent structure.

Finally, designing a tensile membrane over a frame means we can develop many exciting and spectacular structures, allowing you to make a statement for your business.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the fabric structure system?

The fabric structure system creates shaded areas using a metal framework with a durable fabric that is stretched and tensioned over the top to create a roof on top of the structure.

How long do fabric structures last?

The durability of a fabric structure is dependent on the quality of the material and the level of maintenance performed. An adequately maintained PVC fabric structure can last anywhere from 10-30+ years.

What are the advantages of fabric structures?

Fabric structures allow you to cover a large area relatively quickly using far fewer materials than buildings while offering excellent protection from the elements. This makes tension structures a cost-effective option for large spaces.
