    Brief

    Carey Baptist Grammar School identified a need for additional covered outdoor space at its Kew campus to support a growing program of learning, sport and extracurricular use. The existing multipurpose courts were an important part of daily campus life, but exposure to sun and weather limited how consistently the space could be used.

    The school needed a full-span cover that would protect the courts without creating a heavy or visually intrusive addition to the campus. Natural light, glare reduction, durability and minimal maintenance were all important considerations, with the structure required to sit comfortably beside existing buildings.

    The project also carried practical constraints. Greenline needed to manage planning and building approvals, protect the existing court surface, coordinate access and traffic management, and deliver the works within a tight school holiday window to avoid disruption during term.

    Solution

    Greenline worked with Carey Baptist Grammar School to develop a PVC barrel vault structure that balanced performance, durability and architectural fit. The curved white membrane softens sunlight and brings daylight into the courts, while the slim Basalt powdercoated steelwork provides a clean, contemporary frame.

    The tensile membrane solution was selected for its long-term durability, low maintenance requirements and lightweight visual impact. Its neutral tones and curved form were designed to complement the surrounding campus architecture rather than compete with it.

    Greenline managed the full process from design, approvals and procurement through to construction and installation. The works included surface protection, site access planning, traffic management and specialised sports lighting designed to comply with AS2560.2 Australian Standards for netball and basketball.

    Outcome

    The completed structure gives the campus a more flexible outdoor environment for learning, sport and recreation. Students can use the courts in more conditions, with improved comfort, reduced glare and protection from the elements.

    The covered space now supports a broader range of school activities, from everyday play and physical education to training and competition use. The integrated lighting further extends the versatility of the courts, helping the school get more value from the space across the year.

    Delivered during the Christmas holiday program, the project avoided term-time disruption while providing a long-term infrastructure investment for the campus.
