    Brief

Good News Lutheran College’s Mambourin campus is a new school serving a growing community in Melbourne’s west. As the campus developed, one important piece was missing: a covered outdoor space.

The existing basketball and play areas were exposed to rain, heat and strong sun. In wet weather, PE lessons could be pushed back into classrooms, limiting what teachers could offer and how often students could get outside.

The College wanted a practical, flexible space that would solve that problem. It needed to support PE and sport in all weather, while also creating more opportunities for outdoor learning, school activities and larger events.

    Solution

Greenline delivered a covered multi-purpose court designed around everyday use. The open layout and line markings allow the space to support basketball, tennis, volleyball, racquet activities, games and other learning experiences.

A PVC roof provides protection from sun and rain while keeping the space open and connected to the wider campus. Just as importantly, the court gives the College flexibility beyond sport, with a protected area that can also support learning and school gatherings.

Construction was managed within a live school environment, with clear communication and staged works helping to minimise disruption. Safety remained a priority throughout the build, while the College continued to operate around the works.

    Outcome

The new court has made a practical difference to daily life at the campus. Teachers can run PE and outdoor learning with far less reliance on the weather, while students have a protected space they are keen to use.

The value extends beyond the school timetable. The College now has a flexible setting for future events and community gatherings, giving the campus more options as it continues to grow.

For the College, the clearest sign of success has been the students themselves: coming outside, smiling, ready to participate and making the most of the space.

“We couldn’t wait to work with Greenline. We know that the professionalism was exceptional, but the pace in which they worked, in the way that they were able to just understand the context and the space that they were working with was brilliant.”

    Planning a covered school court?

Questions schools ask when creating more flexible space for sport, learning and gathering.

What are the benefits of a covered school court?

A covered school court gives students a more reliable space for PE, play and outdoor learning throughout the year. At Good News Lutheran College, the 558 sqm covered court reduced reliance on the weather and created a flexible space for sport, learning and school events.

Can a covered school court be used for more than sport?

Yes. A well-planned covered court can support much more than PE. At Good News Lutheran College, the open layout and multi-use line markings support basketball, tennis, volleyball, racquet activities, games, outdoor learning and larger school gatherings.

How can a covered court be built while a school is operating?

Construction can be staged around school operations to reduce disruption and maintain safe access for students and staff. At Good News Lutheran College, clear communication and carefully planned works allowed the campus to keep operating throughout construction.
