Extreme heat, rain and poor wayfinding were limiting how students and visitors used Galen’s outdoor spaces. A connected suite of new all-weather structures now links the campus, improves safety, and unlocks year-round learning, sport and gatherings.

Galen Catholic College is a co-educational secondary campus for more than 1,200 students, supported by a long-term masterplan to keep facilities modern and future ready. The campus needed outdoor spaces that worked reliably in regional Victorian conditions, where heat, rain and UV regularly disrupt sport, movement and supervised waiting areas.
Several pinch points had emerged: a double-court area with minimal shade; a confusing, exposed pathway to the admin office that created visitor and child-safety risks; uncovered pickup zones with low lighting and limited protection; and a growing need for outdoor learning spaces following the pandemic.
The challenge was to deliver practical coverage and clear wayfinding while integrating with existing buildings, essential services and accessibility requirements - and to do it with minimal disruption to school operations.
Greenline delivered four coordinated projects with a consistent, modern design language. An all-weather Central Sports Hub fully covers both outdoor courts, preserving rotating basketball/netball rings and avoiding relocation of high-pressure fire outlets. A feature walkway, designed with varying heights and a deliberate incline, creates a clear visual lead-in to admin, with integrated LED lighting that strengthens wayfinding.
Three cantilever-style student protection shelters provide compact-footprint coverage at pickup areas, with integrated drainage to stormwater and bright column lighting to improve security after dark. A dual-sail shade area adds flexible outdoor learning and spectator shade, with future-proofing to add another sail if needed.
The campus now functions as a cohesive, easy to navigate environment where students, staff, parents and visitors can move comfortably in all weather.
Covered courts support assemblies, presentations and sport without seasonal constraints, while the illuminated walkway improves safety and reduces visitor confusion at the admin entry.
Pickup areas have become more secure, comfortable waiting zones, and the new shade sail space extends outdoor learning and spectator amenity. The overall result is a practical transformation underpinned by a connected design approach that supports daily school life for years to come.
