    Brief

Sunshine Christian School serves a small, multicultural community in Melbourne’s western suburbs, with 94 students representing around 28 nationalities. Its limited grounds left few alternatives when the weather changed. PE moved into a small indoor building, while opportunities to play outside at recess and lunchtime were restricted by rain or heat.

The brief was to make the available outdoor space more useful throughout the school day. A covered multipurpose court would give PE lessons a reliable home, create opportunities for outdoor learning and provide room for school and community events.

Delivery needed to respect the same space constraints. Students still needed somewhere to play during construction, so the works could not close off every area at once. The school was looking for a partner who understood those practical needs and could support it from the initial planning stages through to follow-up after completion.

    Solution

Greenline worked closely with the school to develop a covered court suited to its compact grounds. Following a site visit, the team explored several design options with ongoing engineering input. The selected structure combines a PVC roof with a powder-coated finish, providing a sheltered setting for PE, play and outdoor learning.

Keeping students active during construction was a priority. The team completed the works in sections, leaving other play areas open rather than closing off the grounds at once. Regular communication between the school, project manager and site team supported each stage, helping minimise disruption and keep the project on schedule.

    Outcome

The covered court has made the school’s compact grounds more useful for daily sport and play. The school reports that students have not missed a Wednesday PE session due to rain or heat since completion, giving lessons a reliable outdoor home.

The court’s value extends beyond the timetable, providing a shared setting for parent and student events that bring the school community together. Greenline has continued to support the school after handover, responding to requests and making further improvements to the structure.

“It’s just been amazing. Every Wednesday when we have PE, the students haven’t missed a session because of the structure. They’re out here and they can enjoy it and run around. It’s also brought our community together. We’ve been able to have parents and student events on the court here.”

    More from your school grounds?

Questions schools ask about making limited outdoor space more useful for sport, learning and community gatherings.

How can a covered court help a school with limited outdoor space?

A covered multipurpose court helps one outdoor area serve several purposes, making better use of the space available. At Sunshine Christian School, Greenline designed a canopy suited to the school’s compact grounds, creating a sheltered setting for PE, play and outdoor learning. The court also accommodates school and community events.

How can covered court construction be managed around an operating school?

Construction can be staged to keep other play areas available while work progresses. Regular communication between the school, project manager and site team helped coordinate the build and minimise disruption to everyday school life.

How can a covered court be built while a school is operating?

Construction can be staged around school operations to reduce disruption and maintain safe access for students and staff. At Good News Lutheran College, clear communication and carefully planned works allowed the campus to keep operating throughout construction.
