BRIEF
Located in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne, St Francis Xavier College wanted to upgrade its Beaconsfield campus with a sheltered area for all weather. The school had an existing triple sports court that was perfect for outdoor PE and play – and could be easily enhanced with a new structure. Along with providing a space for sports and exercise, the school also planned to use the courts as a multi-purpose, covid-safe space fit for school events. The other factor? Speed. St Francis Xavier College wanted the structure to be up and running as quickly as possible.

APPROACH
Greenline was brought on board to design and build the new sports court cover. The school selected a PVC membrane structure due to its smart, streamlined aesthetic, speedy installation and combined protection from sun and rain. It features a white PVC cover on dark grey posts, creating a visually dynamic structure and perfectly complementing the nearby buildings on campus.

The sports cover is fully equipped with lighting and audio for use during sports games, school assemblies and other community events. Greenline worked with the school’s preferred electrician to design and install the lighting capabilities, so it can be used well into the night . The extent of the PA system also required additional engineering for AV trusses, large speakers and other rigging requirements.

OUTCOME

The installation was completed in just a few weeks, allowing staff and students to make use of the space’s enhanced features quickly. The sports court cover dramatically reduces the ground temperature meaning it’s cooler for students on warm sunny days, essential as they head into warmer months.

The school can use the area for a whole range of purposes now – including some they didn’t plan. Beyond sports games and assemblies, they’ve also held mass and valediction there, enhancing the range of spaces available for large events. Students, staff, and the community are delighted with the finished product and proud of the new eye-catching focal point of the school.
