With three exposed outdoor greens, Halekulani Bowling Club needed a way to protect play and modernise the venue. Greenline delivered a covered synthetic green, acoustic boundary works and a standalone bar and function space, creating a more resilient club with stronger year-round revenue potential.

Halekulani Bowling Club operates in a competitive coastal leisure market and wanted to secure bowls as a year-round drawcard for members, visitors and corporate groups. With three existing greens exposed to heat, wind and rain, the club needed a more reliable playing environment that could support competition, social bowls and events in all conditions.
The project formed part of a broader venue upgrade following the club’s amalgamation with Mounties Group. The brief extended well beyond covering a green. In addition to delivering a high-performance synthetic playing surface under cover, the works needed to improve the overall club experience, create a new hospitality offer and respond carefully to neighbours along the street edge.
A key part of the opportunity was the conversion of the existing greenkeeper and change room shed into a standalone bar and function venue overlooking the green. Greenline was engaged as head contractor to deliver the full package, including the shade structure, green upgrade, acoustic and privacy wall, refurbishment works and the management of compliance requirements across the site.
Greenline designed a fully engineered canopy sized to cover the entire green, with a clean white steel frame and tensioned PVC membrane. Offsite rolling, fabrication, coating and membrane preparation meant most components arrived ready to install, reducing time on site and minimising disruption to club operations.
As head contractor, Greenline coordinated a broader scope of architectural, structural and building works around the green. Integrated lighting, edge detailing and drainage were all resolved to support long-term durability and competition use. Bowling performance was also central to the design, with specialist suppliers and the club’s bowlers helping refine the synthetic system and construction build-up to achieve a fast, true and consistent surface.
The hospitality component became a defining part of the upgrade. Greenline worked with an interior design and fitout team to transform the former greenkeeper and change room shed into a standalone bar and function venue with a relaxed coastal character. Large doors were introduced to open the space directly to the green, strengthening the connection between play, spectating and socialising.
Around the perimeter, a new wall was delivered to provide acoustic buffering and privacy for neighbouring properties, while still maintaining a welcoming feel to the venue.
The combined canopy, hospitality and site works have repositioned Halekulani Bowling Club as a more flexible and future-ready venue on the Central Coast. The covered synthetic green now supports reliable all-weather play, while the standalone bar and function space gives the club a new destination for social connection, group bookings and events directly connected to the action on the green.
On busy weeks, around 200 people now come through for a roll, increasing utilisation of the facility and supporting stronger food and beverage trade. Club representatives have also reported strong satisfaction with the performance of the green and the quality of light under the structure, with reduced shadows creating a more comfortable and consistent playing experience.
The project brought together structure, refurbishment, compliance and amenity improvements in one coordinated delivery. The result is a more complete club venue, with better conditions for play and a stronger foundation for year-round use.
Many of our projects use staged construction, clear access planning and offsite fabrication to minimise disruption. Early coordination with the club helps protect trading periods and keep members informed.
Not if it’s designed properly. Canopy height, membrane selection, and lighting design all influence brightness and shadowing. Glazing and careful detailing can also help preserve natural light and openness around the green.
Yes. Green performance is driven by the base build-up, drainage, surface system and tolerances. Projects can be designed to align with World Bowls competition expectations and tailored to the club’s preferred pace and feel.
