Rosanna Primary school were transforming an outdoor area into a STEM Garden. Their goal for the STEM garden was a “multi-functional, interactive learning space in which students, staff and community members can question, explore, observe, build and innovate in a natural environment”. We love it! You can read more about their project here.
They also let us know they were working through the application process for the Victorian Shade Grant which would fund a large part of the shade sails in the garden.
Due to Covid, our team couldn’t do our standard onsite visit – instead Duncan set up a video call with the principal to understand exactly what they wanted to achieve in the space. After this call the design team came up with two options for different configurations of shade structures. The staff and P&C chose the design which included two Shade Sails over the main activity area and one Star Structure over the sand pit.
After one unsuccessful grant application, their second attempt was accepted, and the project was ready to roll!
To make sure the area was practical and had minimal obstruction from posts, the final design eliminated two posts by attaching the shade sails to 6 posts. The end result is three vibrant shade structures that shade a total of 244m2 of garden!
